Have you heard about Isometric Games? and Chrono Trigger?

$

Hellow again guys.

Before I start post something about Sprites, I will need post about Game View Cameras ‘s Concepts of Parallel Projections. If you are following this blog from the beginning, you must know that I’m developing a game, and this blog is about Electronic Games (Development or not) and about the game that I’m working on. So let’s back to the main subject of this post. Do you know what is an Isometric Game?

In video games, “isometric” refers to some form of parallel projection (commonly, the form of dimetric projection mistakenly referred to as “isometric”) where the viewpoint is rotated slightly to reveal other facets of the game environment than are visible from a top-down perspective or side view, thereby producing a three-dimensional effect. The terms “3/4 perspective”, “2.5D” and “pseudo-3D” are also commonly used.

With the advent of more powerful graphics systems, “isometric” projection is becoming less common, instead being replaced by perspective projection.

Did you understand? No? Maybe? Sure! Dur!?

Well, do you know a game very popular with the name of “Chrono Trigger”?

Image from: Amazon.com, Game: Chrono Trigger

Is really very common the most of the people thinks that Chrono Trigger is an Isometric Game and that is SO WRONG. Well truly speaking is not “SO WRONG”, because Chrono Trigger have a parallel projection.

Ultima 7

Chrono Trigger is more like an Oblique Projection.

Oblique rays hit the canvas at angle between 0 and 180 that’s not 90 degrees. This results in completely arbitrary scaling of dimensions and angle proportions.

Isometric Games is more like:

See the difference? Final Fantasy Tatics and your isometric projection.

n an Isometric view, the scale of all three dimensions — x, y and z — is identical, and the angle between each axis is 120 degrees.

A little more bellow:

images-2

A Dimetric view is very similar to an isometric one, except it’s a bit more loose with its restrictions. Only two axes must be proportionally foreshortened and result in an identical angle (doesn’t really matter what the value of this angle is), while the third one is simply based on the remainder. This is the projection type that’s most often used in videogames and pixel art.

And Trimetric view is the angles between all three axes are different, and, as a result, each axis is also foreshortened by a different amount.

Well enough of Cameras. :)

It is just to try make clear the difference between the Parallel View Cameras.. I’m posting about it, because I will be using something between dimetric and trimetric view in my game and BEFORE start to DRAW any SPRITE is very important try to define what camera are you going to implement in your game. :)

Oh, and here bellow you can download an Isometric Grid, if you want print to …  it is good for start to drawing over a isometric grid to draw isometric things. :P < obvious :3

-EDIT 03/03/2013: If you are looking for a better Isometric Grid, I really recommend you to check this post of mine.

Well, cya in the next post guys. :)

Introducing Darkwood

Darkwood looks to be a really interesting Survival Horror, the game have a very simple gameplay, the camera from the top, well see better on the pre-Alpha Teaser released by “Acid Wizard studio” bellow. ;)

Billed as a “top-down, oldschool survival horror set in a procedurally generated open world, with RPG and roguelike elements,” where players must explore the dark forest surrounding their cabin and defend against the terrors of the night, Darkwood sounds like a project to follow. As the trailer shows, Acid Wizard certainly knows how to do atmosphere, and the gameplay itself strikes me as a top-down mix between Project Zomboid and Alan Wake. A great first impression, to be sure, and I’ll certainly be keeping tabs on this project as it goes forward.

Mini-Review: To The Moon The Best Story EVAH!

$

Rellow Guys, today I will mini-review a really amazing “Game” or an “Interactive Story” if you prefer. “To The Moon”.

First I must say this game has an amazing, deep,

wonderful and sad story. Well let’s begin this Review:

ttm2

Graphic: I took a long time to play this game because I really underestimated this, when I saw the RPGMaker’s Graphics in pixel-graphics on the screenshots, and of course, the first thing I thought this game was a RPG, please, this is a GREAT MISTAKE. Kan Gao (the game creator), rework the engine of the RPGMaker and make it looks like a Great Adventure and have nothing of RPG on this. The graphics are the factor that could make you think twice before you play this game, but when you go in, you can feel the graphics matching so well with the plot that you will feel this “Interactive Story” is PERFECT for the propose.

To-The-Moon-2b

Story: The  plot is really amazing and have several details that will really need a double attention from you to catch and truly understand what is happening there. I will post bellow a simple plot of the game from Wikipedia, avoiding spoilers for you understand what it is about:

The premise of To The Moon is based around a technology that allows the construction of artificial permanent memories. Sigmund Corp., a company that uses this technology, offers the notion of “wish fulfillment” as a service to people on their death bed. Since these artificial memories are permanent, it sharply conflicts with the patient’s real memories soon after the person awakens, which is why it is only done on those without much time left to live.

The story follows Dr. Eva Rosalene and Dr. Neil Watts (employed by Sigmund Corp.) as they fulfill the lifelong dream of the dying Johnny Wyles. Johnny’s wish isn’t that simple: he wants to go to the moon, although he doesn’t know why. To accomplish this task, the doctors must insert themselves into an interactive compilation of his memories and traverse backwards through his life via mementos. With each leap to an important moment in his mind, they learn more about the patient and what brought him to his current position in life. Upon reaching his childhood, the doctors attempt to insert his desire to go to the moon.

But not everything goes as planned….

To-The-Moon-3

Gameplay: The player will control two characters Dr. Eva Rosalene and Dr. Neil Watts, both characters with great charisma and frequently alternating  the control between them. The player must look for  mementos inside the memories of a man called Johny and “travel” between several fragments of memory trying to understand the desire of Johny to go to the moon.

The Gameplay is really simple and fun, It will look like you are playing a RPG without battles, but with a lot of exploration.

ToTheMo

Sound: You must listen to believe.

The Sound of everything is perfect, every music and ambient sound match perfectly with the situation of the plot’s mood.

Conclusion:To The Moon is unique and  rare. If you want to engage in a beautiful story. YOU MUST PLAY. 10/10 RECOMMENDED.

And of course I’m anxious to see the sequel.

The Old Game from NES “Shadowgate” Remake is now on Steam!!

A fabulous old game called “Shadowgate” released for the first time in 1987, a point-and-click adventure, originally was made for Apple Macintosh and so it was also ported to others computers and videogames. 1989 the “more popular” version has been release for Nintendo Enterment System. The game has it name causa of his story setting, “Castle Shadowgate”, residence of a Great Evil Warlock Lord. And the player of course, must save the world by defeating this devil Warlock Lord. I didn’t play the new version yet, but the old one from NES was a great adventure and I’m anxious to play the new one.

sg1

And one more thing, this new version of the Shadowgate was kickstarted on October 26, 2012. One more “great work” coming from Kickstarter. They set a crowd-funding of $120,000. The campaign was finished with successfully, earning $137,232 in pledges by November 25, 2012 and reaching its first stretch goal.

If you want to know more about the new Shadowgate give a look on STEAM HERE! And you can watch a “trailer” bellow. ;)

Good Old Games#2 – Ultima Online: “Second Age”

$

0

Hellow guys, following my series “Good Old Game#MagicNumberHere”. And if you want, you can read the Good Old Games#1 HERE!

Today I will “talk” about a really amazing game that consumed a lot of time of my life. :3 And probably the BEST (or maybe the second BEST) MMORPG ever released in the Humanity Story.

This game is…

uo2

Ultima Online but…

I’m not talking about the Ultima Online that is running on an EA Server right now, and you can go there and play, no, no, not this one, I’m talking about the Ultima Online: The Second Age, an awesome, incredible and amazing game released in 1998, published by EA, developed by Origin Systems, designed by the great Raph Koster and ” created by Richard Garriot.

uo3

Different from most current MMORPGs, this old MMO does not have a linear sequence of story, doesn’t possess scalar quests, the player just builds his life with the other players in the world and grow over time your own skills. The player must learn in this MMORPG to manage well their gold pieces and his own life, because it can become expensive.

uo4

Ultima Online happens in an Ultima Universe, similar to other games of the series (including some extremely classic NPCs such as Lord British).

At the time of its release date, Ultima Online wasn’t easily accessible here in my country for one big main reason. Was his way of payment, which the international transaction was not very easy, but anyway, I end playing Ultima Online in the Official Shard and later in alternative free shard who sought to imitate the original server. Many of them have become extremely popular, some servers could often achieve a higher amount to a thousand players online simultaneously.

uo5

Ultima Online proved a unique and popular game, however unfortunately EA bought the rights to the game in 2000 and others interesting features of the game were removed or altered, but thanks to today Free Shards players can enjoy the original game of Origin. Oh, and In Ultima Online the “Servers” was called of “Shards”, cause of the plot of the game. ;)

uo6

Why Ultima Online is a unique game?

Good, let’s “talk” a little about the game, unlike the current MMOs, Ultima Online wasn’t about focus on Grind killing monsters, and say killing monsters would be a part of the survival task. The goal was really to build your life in a medieval world, you could become a carpenter, blacksmith, tailor and obvious, as already mentioned you could just become a beautiful archer, mage, swordsman and many other things. The freedom of Ultima is impressive, an hour you could be building a beautiful armor, another time could be an engaged on an  incredible battle against a dragon.

uo8

The world of Ultima Online was immense and it was possible to travel by riding, using boats and Runes. The runes were stones, in which a magician could record their position to eventually return to the same place using the “Recall” spell.

The system evolution is very similar to Oblivion or Daggerfall, the more you used your skills, more you become powerful, no “Level up” system here. For example, a blacksmith can start building small iron daggers when he is a novice and later when become a Grandmaster he can craft beautiful Halberd Diamond with his name engraved and still with some knowledge of poison was possible to add a dose of poison in the blade and make it even more lethal weapon. Produce a Robe must go through the whole process, the player can plant your cotton (or buy), weaving the fabric and sew the Robe everything in great detail, but without complexity.

uo9

A Hardcore game.

Although I don’t  really appreciate the word “Hardcore” games, Ultima Online was a serious game that could destroy or brighten your day. The game provided a lot of freedom to the player (which does not occur today in the most current version), PK (Player Killers) was everywhere in the game, your trip from one city to another could easily be finished for a PK (or a guild full of bloodthirsty players). The Player Killers avoid entering in the cities, not because they could not, but because there in the cities have NPCs “Guards” that could kill them easily and if a player typed  “Guards!” an NPC guard could appear to protect this player looking for some thief or killer. The death of a player is somewhat complex to accept, because in your death, all your items in your bag and in your body, become available to other players to loot. For example: do you know that magical, unique and amazing item that you got? If a PK (Player Killer) kill you, you may send a Goodbye to this item. Perhaps one of the most tense moments in the life of a player is when he buys a house and he need to “deploy” his new house, because besides being very expensive, the player shall carry a deed of the house allowing it to be “deployed” on any free surface of the map and only outside the protection of the guards, that mean a PK could kill you and take your dream home away.

Of course it’s can get very worse on a Permanent Death Shards (Servers), but that one is not for me. :3

uo10

Ultima Online has the possibility to interact with the whole scenario, a little like the Elder Scrolls series, we “take” or “use” almost everything we can see.

The political and trade of the game was extremely functional, players traded raw materials(wood logs, ore, gems etc…) for cash with other players. All raw materials has its uses. The clans could create your own hierarchical systems, could build a fort and fight for their rights and domains.

Nowadays the official game is very different from before and it is available for sale and monthly pay in http://www.ultimaonline.com, now have so many new expansions, some upgrades made the graphics of the game become very better like the  Third Age, Kingdom Reborn, and others. Many upgrades and changes made by EA, it includes powerful changes in relation to the PK system, besides the gates to teletransport the player between towns and worlds, the System itself has been changed, Skills, Quests and even a bit of Grind it was adopted, but there have some good free shards of Ultima Online Second Age if you look for it.

Bellow a screenshot from the expansion Kingdom Reborn, with a better visual.

UO-Kingdom_Reborn

For last, Ultima Online is a great game and brings a unique and exceptional experience.

Kickstarter Game of the Week: Uncrowned Skies

Hellow Guys, the “Kickstarter Game of the Week” this week is “Uncrowned Skies“, the game looks very interesting in story concept, in the universe and the gameplay itself.

unskyes2

Uncrowned Skies is an adventure game set in the trinary star system of Trestella. The player must work to unite the varied and diverse cultures of Trestella against the Diarchy, the local galactic superpower looking to annex Trestella, and by doing so, suffocate its unique cultures. The cultures of Trestella can largely be grouped into three societies – the poor miners and laborers of the Tahanan system, set to mine heavy metals from their own sun; the space Vikings of Kjarna, seeking to recreate a culture long-past and barely remembered; and the urbanites of the Rodza system, from urban organ harvesters to bankers and businessmen alike. Samson is recruited by the resistance movement, the Trest, and tasked with uniting the leaders of these civilizations under one banner to defend against the approaching annexation. Due to a weapons embargo imposed by the Diarchy, the Trest has been forced to largely improvise weapons. Samson wields a weaponized toaster that has been granted intelligence and, unfortunately, a personality. He calls himself Chester, and doesn’t get along well with others. Armed with only an appliance, Samson faces both an overwhelming invasion force as well as his own neighbors, who are not easily satisfied. But he will fight.

unskyes2

Some features introduced looks very awesome, like the idea of a Huge Futuristic World with different architecture, culture and inhabitants. The diversity of characters and the artworks looks amazing and the idea of a dynamic rpg system, which every conversation you will change something about the world.

unskyes5

Honestly I didn’t like too much about the idea of fighting with a toaster, but the universe in Uncrowned Skies looks really awesome and certainly it is a promising game.

Famitsu has revealed this week the new JRPG developed by Sega “The World End Eclipse” ワールド エンド エクリプス, a new free-to-play “online theater RPG” and it is coming this winter in Japan for PS Vita Smartphones and PC. And if you didn’t get used to online and no table-console games coming from Japan, is better get used to. :/ (Yeah that is sad I know, read this sad POST HERE to understand)

wee1

So, the game is produced by Shinji Motoyama, he made an amazing work on Valkyria Chronicles 2. The character design is on the work by Katsumi Enami.

It is set in a ruined world destroyed by a war between dragons. People who were chased off the land built a city on the back of a dragon carcass and are forced to deal with conflicts caused by people and attacking goblins alike. That’s the setting; it’s not only fantasy, but it has military elements, as well.

Save data is compatible across all three types of hardware, and online servers are shared, meaning cross-platform co-op play is also possible. Additionally, the game’s world might change depending on the player’s actions. Read more in GEMATSU

Kickstarter Game of the Week: Phoenix Dawn

This week I will introduce here a very charming role-playing adventure game in Kickstarter “Phoenix Dawn“.

pehix1

This screenshot remember me Dune. :)

From what is shown in the Kickstarter Project’s page the game looks for me very promising and interesting. The project already have 3 years of development and it have beautiful graphics. ;)

Phoenix Dawn is a role-playing adventure game set in a world filled with magic and mystery. You play the character of Phoenix – a young girl with extraordinary abilities.  Her story will take you on an emotional journey about an unspeakable evil tearing her world a part.  Armed with only a wand and a limited knowledge of how to use her powers – she sets off on a journey that will take her far from home. An adventure that will forever change the young sorceress and her companions.

phoenix2

The game have a ton of interesting features, such as exploration, rich storyline, the spell system and some more.

Phoenix Dawn works with art style of Low Poly, with low quality and simple 3D Models. Personally I don’t mind how simple is the graphics, the most important is how it will reach the player’s heart. And Phoenix Down looks beautiful enough for me.

phoenix4

Depending from the stretch goal the game will be released to: Mac, PC, Android, Windows Mobile and OUYA. It is a nice project and I recommend it, give a BETTER LOOK in the official Kickstarter project Link HERE!!!

Good Old Games#3 – Fallout 1

Hellow! Here we are with Good Old Games Number 3, just remembering the idea of the texts on this page are destined and intended primarily for readers who have never played this game presented and introduce to the reader and what he is “missing”, but of course, if you already played and want to remember some of that Good Old Game, you are also super welcome. ;)
Today we have one of the best cRPGs (in my humble opinion): Fallout, yes the first one. ;)

fall3

Apparently I can show an impression of hating Fallout 3, which is not true, but Fallout 3 is far from offering all the features that the first fallout have, even when we talk about the universe’s immersion, but I consider Fallout 3 a great game. Read below and you will understand better what I meant.

fallout1_RNV

This masterpiece is a true electronic RPG developed by Black Isle (Tim Cain) and published by Interplay in 1997. The game was based on an electronic RPG called Wasteland, which is receiving a particular attention in the media due to his success in the Kickstarter, the production of its sequel Wasteland 2, Well… Returning to Fallout 1, it is a game with a post apocalyptic theme in the 22 century, although his style and art resemble a lot with 50 years due to the nuclear paranoia of the time.

fallout1_rnv2

The plot takes place in 2077, in a first generation of postwar. The player was born in a nuclear shelter, more precisely Vault 13 People can live peacefully within these shelters, they recycle their own waste and purify their own water, but there is a serious problem arises, the chip water purifier Vault 13 has broken and now it’s time for the player to leave to the dangerous world in search of a new chip, otherwise the inhabitants will die in 150 days.

fallout2

At the moment the player steps outside the gates Steel Vault 13, the game really starts and comes that doubt in the head “Where the hell do I go now?” And that is exactly the proposal of Fallout is making the player survive and interact with this wild world. Through a mapworld the player navigates between key points, that include cities, ruins, caves, etc… On entering one of these “key points” the player has the freedom to control your character to move, interact with almost anything.

fallout

There are thousands of quests in fallout, which can usually be solved in many different ways (some of these ways are not very conventional solution, which may impress the player), thus gaining experience and karma points, but none of these quests will limit the freedom that the game provides, which is indeed impressive and practically every action creates a reaction and that’s where we have one of the most amazing features of fallout 1, the player can attack and kill any NPC that is in his way, for example “do you know that npc selling awesome items that you do not have money to buy?”, “Yes”,the player can kill him and loot EVERYTHING he was selling, however it can generate a reaction. If the player kills many innocent people their head can be costly. In short, the player’s actions can actually change the end of the game, or rather change the quests yet to come.

GURPS-3rd-rev

The Battle system in Fallout, initially the Black Isle would use the GURPS system, but according to Steve Jackson, it did not work well, then the Black Isle decided to create and use an own system for Fallout, SPECIAL Which is extremely functional turn-based, where the characters have AP (Action Points), as the name suggests, these points define the number of actions that the player can perform at every turn, every action spends a preset number of APs, such as if you move, use a weapon, access inventory, etc… All of this “actions” use APs. Another innovative and interesting feature of the game is that you can aim at certain body parts of the opponent, being able to cause a critical hit or even turn parts of the enemy’s body unusable, for example, if you shoot in the enemy eye, he will become blind; If you shoot in the legs he will become unable to walk. Well, that is the proposal of the combat in Fallout.

For last Fallout 1 is impressive and will offer to the player a unique kind of freedom feeling in-game, not only in the player’s movement, but also in the solutions of their quests, if you think Fallout 3 already offers enough freedom, I guarantee you have seen nothing yet. Making it clear that Fallout 2 is as good as Fallout 1, both games are amazing. And for those who like it and want to go a little deeper, there is also the Fallout Tactics, Fallout Tactics is not really bad, but it works in a different way from the other two Fallout, his proposal is to apply a style of play more “Casual” and add a multiplayer cooperative and competitive mode, although the combat system adds the option to play as Free-Roam, just like a “Diablo”, which I believe it makes the game become very fast and harder to play.

For those who want to buy Fallout, it is available on Steam HERE and it was removed from GOG, because it was DRM free and the publish (Bethesda) won’t allow more the Fallout DRM free version available (my deduction). :3

Thx for read, cya. ;)

Have you heard about Isometric Games? and Chrono Trigger?

$

0

:P < obvious :3

isogrid

This Week the Humble-Bundle is bringing Bastion, yeah, that mean you “Pay what you want” for Bastion. The action-RPG Bastion won over the gaming public with its incredible attention to every detail—from the tight combat controls, to the inspired, narrator-driven storytelling in a novel, post-apocalyptic fantasy world. Players take on the role of the Kid, entrusted with the thankless task of restoring the world after a disastrous calamity. With a none-too-small arsenal of stylized weapons, jaw-dropping art, and amazing music, Bastion truly deserves its reputation as a must-play indie game by Supergiant Games.
